2020 Alentejo Deep (photos)

Alentejo deep is a photographic exploration of the marble quarries in southern Portugal. Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is exposed to high temperatures inside the Earth’s crust. The origin of marble can be traced back to the remains of ancient marine life. Its colors result from the interplay of mineral intrusions such as clay, silt, sand and iron. Mining for marble in southern Portugal dates back to at least Roman times and it represents a journey down through Earth in time and space.

Alentejo deep is a homage to this unique material and landscape in their raw and transitory form.
